Bakersfield California Sheraton Hotel

On Saturday, April 18, 2020, Governor Gavin Newsom announced that the state had secured 10,974 hotels for the homeless in California. It was a month ago that he launched a program called Project Roomkey, in which the state of California rented 15,000 hotel rooms to accommodate the homeless. Now, more than a month later, the first of these hotels - the Baker City Sheraton Hotel in Baker, California - is in operation.

Local officials have secured more than 900 hotel rooms as part of a program run by the state Department of Social Services called Project RoomKey. Santa Barbara County has taken in about 1,500 homeless people, mostly from the San Francisco Bay Area, since Project Roomkey began, and 232 of those rooms are already occupied.

The one-time financing, which was granted in November 2020, will allow Project Roomkey to continue operations with customers staying in motels and hotel rooms until 19 December 2020. Newsom said the $100 million program, which reallocates hotels and motels, will expire in time for FEMA to fund California's Roomkey Hotels project to end the crisis. According to statewide data presented at Tuesday's conference, homeless people are also less likely to use hospital emergency rooms, and according to California Department of Health data, they sometimes account for up to 30 percent of total emergency room visits, a record for the state's emergency department. Marisa Kendall of the News-News Mercury News said FEMA is funding California's ProjectRoomkey hotels as part of FEMA's plan to "end the housing crisis."

Governor Gavin Newsom said Tuesday that he hopes to build on the state's efforts to house the homeless by April 9, 2020, and among those efforts in the state is Project Roomkey, a partnership between the California Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) and the city of Bakerfield. The hotel and the motels it will include will be provided with supporting services, including accommodation, meals, accommodation, medical care, transportation and other services for the homeless. Project Roomkey is a collaborative effort to create affordable housing for people with mental health, substance abuse and substance use disorders.

Project Roomkey includes hotel staff and California Project roomkey nurses, who participated in the project's presentations in the hotel lobby. Lee Fournier's hotel room, provided by ProjectRoomkey, is photographed by the Bakerfield Department of Housing and Community Development and the City of Bakerville.

The Sequoia Lodge Hotel is the second hotel in Visalia to be converted into a refuge as part of the initiative that emerged from the State Homekey Initiative in the wake of the COVID 19 pandemic in 2020. Project Roomkey focuses on taking selected California Project Roomkey nurses and their staff to hotels and motel rooms. They are located in 16 hotels, including the Sierra Nevada Hotel in Bakerfield and the Bakerville Hotel, as well as a number of downtown hotels, including the Bakersfield Convention Center, the City of Bakerville and several other local hotels.
