A wildfire in California that killed two people and destroyed more than 200 homes in the southern Sierra Nevada spiraled out of control Tuesday, clearing the way for residents to return to homes that survived the devastating blaze. Violent winds that had rocked the state and caused power outages to tens of thousands of people were blowing back to life on Tuesday. About 2,000 residents in the town of Bakersfield, about 30 miles north of San Francisco, were evacuated when winds began to trigger vegetation fires, KNTV reported.
The fire burned for three hours and then turned into separate fires that burned more than 1,000 acres of grass, trees and other vegetation. The fire destroyed most of the city, but the city was later reincorporated and the larger Bakersfield-San Joaquin Valley was largely surrounded. According to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire), about 1.5 million acres burned, or about half the area of Los Angeles County.
Two coronavirus vaccination centers were closed, Yosemite National Park was forced to close, trees and trucks toppled, and firefighters chased the wind - driving the flames across the state. The city of Manteca sent four firefighters to the Los Angeles area, and the state of California reimbursed $1.2 million in damages under the California Fire Protection Act (CAFPA). Two layers of the Bakersfield-San Joaquin Valley Fire Department Cal were replaced by standard layers.
