Bakersfield was first discovered and settled in the fertile valley by Spanish missionaries and explorers who came to the area in the 1700;s and into the 1840’s the mighty whitewater river that goes through the canyon was named in honor of artist/photographer, Lt. Edward Meyer Kern. Gold was discover in the Kern River in 1851 and that brought a flock of new pioneers.

Since its early beginnings, the mountainous range of the San Bernardino Valley has been known as an area where new trails are blazed in this vast region. Bakersfield bustles with diverse activities, and continues to bring new discoveries to the area.
